If I were president, the conflict between Russia and Ukraine would never have taken place. But even now, if I were, I could reach an agreement to end it in a matter of 24 hours," he said in a message posted on his own social network, Truth Social.
For his part, the Kremlin spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said he agreed with Trump's words and pointed out that, if he were president, "it is possible that the Ukrainian crisis would be resolved quickly through his influence on Kiev".
"Theoretically, Trump is not far from the truth. The American president, really, if he wanted to, could put an end to the conflict and he could do it quickly by using, let's say, his skills or simply giving instructions to Kiev," he asserted during a press conference, as reported by Interfax news agency.
He also pointed out that a series of "instructions" from Washington "would be enough for Kiev", which would respond "even if not in one or two days". "The key is that Ukraine is basically in the hands of the United States," he added.
"At the moment we see that the current head of state does not want this, does not want to use his position and instead decides to increase arms shipments to Ukraine," Peskov lamented.
In this regard, he has again accused the United States of putting pressure on Ukraine and provoking an increase in hostilities, which could lead to the shipment of nuclear weapons, as expressed by Trump. "We agree with these words and believe that there is an increase in tension. That occurs, among other things, because of the decisions that are made. First of all, that of the United States and that of the European capitals, which are talking about sending weapons and battle tanks," he has said.
On Thursday, Trump lamented the international shipment of battle tanks to Ukraine considering that this "could escalate hostilities." "First tanks, then come the nuclear weapons," he said in a message in which he called on the current White House occupant, Joe Biden, to "put an end to this crazy war".
Biden announced on January 25 the decision to send 31 Abrams tanks to the country after almost a year of war. Subsequently, the Pentagon clarified that the shipment could not be made immediately since there are not that many tanks in U.S. arsenals.

Former Russian President ratchets up nuclear rhetoric in latest charged statement,

What did Dmitry Medvedev say this time?
The deputy chairmen of Russia's Security Council and former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev warned on January 26th that a defeat in Ukraine could lead the world into nuclear war.
Medvedev's comments
“The loss of a nuclear power in a conventional war can provoke the outbreak of a nuclear war,” Medvedev wrote on his Telegram channel.
Representing humanities folly
“Nuclear powers do not lose major conflicts on which their fate depends," the former Russian President added, “This should be obvious to anyone. Even to a Western politician who has retained at least some trace of intelligence.”
NATO condemned Medvedev's nuclear threats
The Secretary-General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg condemned Medvedev's nuclear threats, calling them dangerous and accusing Russia of attempting to blackmail Western powers into ending their assistance to Ukraine.
The risk is low and Russia's rhetoric is irresponsible.
“The risk of using nuclear weapons is low. But Russian nuclear rhetoric is utterly irresponsible," Stoltenberg said in an interview with Germany's WELT newspaper.
Russia should know nuclear war can't be won
"It is dangerous. Russia should know that a nuclear war can never be won and therefore should never be fought,” Stoltenberg continued.
We are watching Russia closely
“Of course, we are watching what Russia is doing very closely," Stoltenburg added, "If that were the case, we would of course react. But even if we allow Russia to blackmail us with this rhetoric, then the world will become more dangerous."
Stoltenberg's biggest worry
"Then Russia would keep coming up with this nuclear threat when it wants to achieve something,” the NATO chief concluded.
A difficult situation
Russia is facing a difficult situation in Ukraine and it seems falling back on nuclear threats is one of the few options they have left to scare Western audiences.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and his cronies have been making nuclear threats with increasing regularity in the last few months, with the most worrying message coming when he proposed changing Russia's nuclear first-strike policy.
A nuclear first strike might be necessary according to Putin
On December 9th, President Putin said that Moscow was considering adopting what he described as a nuclear first-strike policy to the country’s military doctrine.
“We are just thinking about it,” Putin told reporters during a meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council in Kyrgyzstan
A discussion aimed at the West
Putin’s discussion about adding a first-strike policy to Russia’s military doctrine seemed to be aimed Western audience and was framed as a “preventative” measure that would only be used to disarm an adversary.
Putin is making trouble again
“If we are talking about a disarming strike, perhaps we should think about using the approaches of our American partners,” Putin said.
A policy similar to the U.S.
“They weren’t shy to openly talk about it during the past years,” Putin continued, referencing the United States’ current policy on nuclear first-strike strategy.
Putin comments on the practicality
“If the potential adversary believes that it can use the theory of a preemptive strike and we don’t, it makes us think about the threats posed by such ideas in other countries’ defensive posture,” the Russian president added.
The risk of nuclear war is rising
Putin’s comments came on the heels of the Russian President's December 7th warning to the West that the risk of global nuclear war was rising.
The Kremlin's concerns
For years, the Kremlin has expressed its concerns about the American government's pursuit of developing a weapons delivery system that could knockout an opponent's strategic targets anywhere in the world within one hour.
The Conventional Prompt Global Strike
Known as the Conventional Prompt Global Strike capability, Congress and the Pentagon noted in a 2021 report that they have placed increasing importance on “U.S. programs to develop hypersonic weapons—those that can travel at speeds greater than Mach 5 and maneuver to improve accuracy or evade defenses as they approach their targets.”
U.S. nuclear doctrine versus Russian nuclear doctrine
While current U.S. nuclear doctrine allows for a preemptive first strike against an opponent in total war, Russia had never included any major first-strike policies to be used to disarm an enemy.
Russia allows nukes to be used for defense only
Russia does, however, allow for its nuclear arsenal to be used as a weapon of last resort in the event that the state is threatened. But in December Putin seemed intent on revamping his country’s global nuclear strategy.
Only meant for "military" targets
Putin followed up on this comment by noting that any first stroke from Russia would solely focus on knocking out key command and control facilities, though he did not rule out the possibility of civilian targets being included.

The breaking point seems near
Putin has yet to publicly announce that he has changed Russia's nuclear policy, but it isn't going to stop him from pushing his nuclear war narrative to Western audiences

Germany has cleared the Leopard 2 for Ukraine
Germany has finally agreed to send its Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine, but how will this state-of-the-art weapon change the face of the war?
When will we see the Leopard 2 in action?
Experts are predicting that Ukraine’s new Leopard 2 tanks make an appearance on the battlefield as early as this spring according to reporting from Breaking Defense, which means Russia may not have long before it is finally kicked out of its occupied territories.
Pressure from allies
After weeks of pressure from his closest allies, German Chancellor Olaf Shultz has finally agreed to supply Ukraine with its most modern main battle tank according to NPR's Rob Schmitz.
Germany will only send 14 tanks
Poland is ready to supply Leopards to Ukraine
So how will the Leopard 2 tank change the war in Ukraine?
Ukraine needs at least 300 tanks according to its top general
Back in December, Commander-in-Chief of the Ukranian Armed Forces General Valerii Zaluzhny told The Economist that he needed at least 300 main battle tanks in order to support a large-scale counter-offensive to push Russia out of the last of its occupied territory.
How many Leopards can Europe spare?
It is unlikely that Ukraine will hit its required 300 number, Germany only has about 320 Leopard 2 tanks in its reserves according to CNN, and is unlikely to send more. But the removal of the Leopard’s export ban could be a major game changer.
Polish stockpiles
Poland, for one, has a stockpile of 247 Leopard 2 tanks and was committed to sending a significant portion of its tanks to their Ukranian ally even if Germany didn’t give them approval.
Poland is starting by sending a company
“Poland has decided that, as part of the development of an international coalition, it is ready to deliver a company of leopard tanks to Ukraine,” a spokesperson for the polish ministry of national defence told defense news.
How many tanks are in a standard company?
A standard NATO company consists of 14 tanks but it is likely Poland will send far more Leopard 2’s to Ukraine in the coming weeks as more partners sign on to assist..
Who else is sending leopards to ukraine?
At present, over twelve allied countries were committed to sending at least 100 leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine if Germany consented, according to a senior Ukrainian official who spoke with ABC news on January 23rd.
What can Ukraine do with 100 tanks?
It may not be the required 300 number but 100 modern western main battle tanks can make a huge difference in Ukraine’s war with Russia.
Meeting the enemy head on
“Tanks represent the most powerful direct offensive weapon provided to Ukraine so far, a heavily armed and armored system designed to meet the enemy head-on instead of firing from a distance,” wrote CNN’s Rob Picheta.
A powerful tool in the fight for freedom
“If used properly with the necessary training, they could allow Ukraine to retake territory against Russian forces that have had time to dig defensive lines,” Picheta continued, adding that the “Leopard 2 tank would be a powerful fighting vehicle for Ukraine’s battlegrounds.”
Hamstrung by numbers and technology
Tanks have played a major role in shaping the conflict in Ukraine since Russia began its invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, but Ukraine has been hamstrung by its numerical and technological deficit.
One of the best modern tanks in the world
“The German-made Leopard 2 is one of the most well-reputed battle tanks in the world, perhaps second only to the U.S.-made M1 Abrams tank,” wrote NPR’s, Becky Sullivan.
A big step up for the Ukrainian Armed Forces
“For its part,” Sullivan added, “Ukraine has mostly relied on Soviet-era T-72 tanks.” So the introduction of the Leopard 2 to the battlefield would represent a significant enhancement of Ukraine’s combat capabilities.
Breaking through in the south
The most likely scenario is that Ukriane’s new Leopards will be combined with the new 90 Stryker combat vehicles and 59 Bradley fighting vehicles they're receiving from the U.S. to form a cohesive armored brigade capable of breaking through in Russia’s vulnerable southern position.
The potential to cut off southern Russian forces in Kherson and Crimea
If successful, Ukrainian forces could cut Crimea off from reinforcement and supply, starving out Russian troops in the south of Ukraine in a manner similar to their Kherson offensive in late 2022.
The spearhead of the next counter-offensive
According to retired US Army Lieutenant General Ben Hodges, Western tanks like the Leopard 2 could be used as "the spearhead of a force that could break through those Russian defenses down towards Mariupol."
No comment from Putin I
Vladimir Putin has yet to comment on Germany’s decision to send Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine but Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov condemned the move and said it would only lead to further escalation.
Dmitry Peskov's comments
"Such deliveries do not bode well for the future of the relationship," Peskov said. "They will certainly leave an indelible mark on the future of this relationship."

Nobody said it would be easy...
It's been almost a year since Russian troops invaded Ukraine and the question remains if Volodymyr Zelensky can lead his country to victory.
TIME person of the year
Zelensky has earned the respect and admiration of the West. TIME magazine even named the Ukrainian President and “the spirit of Ukraine” as their 2022 person of the year
An easy pick
According to the TIME magazine editors, the choice was “the most clear-cut in memory”. “For proving that courage can be as contagious as fear, for stirring people and nations to come together in defense of freedom, for reminding the world of the fragility of democracy”.
Won't go without a fight
Although Ukraine has made progress in the past months, it's no secret that Russia won't go without a fight.
The Battle of Soledar
The Battle of Soledar, in which Russia fought for several months to gain control of the town of Soledar in Donetsk, is proof of that.
Victory, but at what cost?
The battle has been regarded as one of the bloodiest in the conflict, with hundreds killed on either side and Soledar virtually destroyed.
David Vs. Goliath
Zelensky has proven to be far stronger and more resilient than the Kremlin's wildest expectations. But can he actually achieve the unthinkable and defeat one of the biggest armies in the world? Let's look at the facts.
Happy birthday, Mr. President
The Crimean Bridge explosion on October 8, the day after Vladimir Putin's birthday, seems to have served as a wake-up call for the Russian military to change its strategy against Ukraine. Since then, the bridge has been repaired.
General Armageddon
What is true is that, just a few hours after the attack, Putin assigned General Sergei Surovikin as the military commander of all the Russian troops in Ukraine. Surovikin has been nicknamed "General Armageddon" due to his actions in Syria
Russia strikes back
Since then, the BBC reports that missile strikes have dramatically increased all over Ukraine.
Power to the people!
The strategy has focused on attacking infrastructure, affecting Kyiv, and leaving key areas in Ukraine without power or communications.
Sudden replacement
On January 2023, Surovikin was replaced by Valery Gerasimov (pictured here with Putin) after three months, leaving many wondering why the sudden replacement after many gains.
Russia-style democracy
Russia has also attempted to gain legitimacy in its special military operation with a referendum on whether four occupied Ukrainian regions want to be under the rule of Moscow.
Sham referendum
Most of the international community denounced the referendum, which took place in late September, as a farce and doesn't recognize the unsurprisingly pro-Russian results.
Thousands of miles in just a few days
Meanwhile, the BBC reported back in September that Ukrainian forces managed to recover over 3,000 square kilometers (more than 1,150 square miles) in just a few days after months of apparent stalemate.
Ukraine did more in a week than Russia in four months
To put that in perspective, The New York Times wrote that Ukraine gained more territory in one week than Russia had done in four months
Blitzkrieg is the name of the game
The BBC highlighted two key factors for Ukraine’s victory in the Kharkiv region. Firstly, the element of surprise in these lighting attacks
Victory is spelled out HIMARS
Secondly, weapons provided by the west such as long-range multiple rocket launchers.
Putin's feet of clay
Russia’s shocking military setbacks were felt back home where, according to The New York Times, Putin’s image as a brilliant strategist was been put into question
Understimating the enemy
“It's already clear that we underestimated the enemy,” commented a military analyst from Russian tabloid Moskovsky Komsomolets, who was cited by the BBC. “We suffered a defeat and tried to minimize the loss by withdrawing our troops, so they weren't surrounded”.
Waiting for the Russian counterattack
However, despite the optimism, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov warned at the time that Moscow could prepare a counterattack from the east, which since then has materialized.

Aiming towards Bakhmut
Russian troops have seized Soledar and seem to be making their way to the city of Bakhmut, which would cement their position in the Donbas region.
Goodwill doesn't win wars
Despite all the goodwill the West has shown to Zelensky, the Ukrainian President knows that this is not enough and has repeatedly requested more money and weapons to fight Russia.
The big question, of course, is if this is enough to win the war.
